So much to talk about...
Starting with this: So, Senator, do we get them out now? Or do we leave them there for our own political advantage? Good question, huh?
The Wolfpack defense plays like men, but damn all to the offense. Everybody's hurt and those that aren't hurt apparently can't play. Shout out to Nate Irving for being a bright spot in a very dark place.
Apparently, the news that refineries will be shut down until after the hurricane creates an instant shortage. I don't know what it's like in the Triangle, but the closest station to my house was selling it for $4.899/gallon Saturday morning. Unlike some of the increase that's been going on over the last 2 years, this clearly seems to be price gouging by individual station owners. I give as evidence the fact that the second-closest station to my house held out at $3.499 until last night when they moved up to $3.959. Drill more and in more different places, and supply will not be an issue like this.

Drilling only pushes the problem out to somewhere else in the future. What we need is viable alternatives. Reduce our dependency on oil, reduce the need to drill. It ain't f'ing rocket science.
Wouldn't it be nice if your power bill was 20 bucks in the dead of summer because you had two huge gigantic solar panels on your roof providing power?
Everyone wants to drill in politics cause they all have a stake in the oil business. If oil goes up, they stay rich.
A shortage of refineries won't be solved by more oil wells.
Drilling in ANWR will provide the United States' total daily consumption of oil...for 100 days. And it will take several years to get fully set up. More drilling is a just a nice sound bite.
Hopefully the AG will make an example of the price gougers in the meantime.
Could it also be that with the shortage of gasoline that pushed up the price of gas so people will think "gee I can't afford to fill the 30+ gallon tank, I can only afford to get 10 gallons." therefore people get their gas and the station owners will continue to have gas until the shortage gets straightened out.
I firmly believe its better for the US if the price of gas goes up. The more it goes up, the more people think about alternatives. Gas at $2 doesnt affect anyone. Gas at $8 and I guarantee we'll all start looking at hybrids, electrics, or heck a bicycle more.
I'm all about alternatives. I think we ought to be investigating every possible alternative. But, that's not going to help us in the short term. We need to have more supply. That means more drilling and more refining. and, as far as whether or not we'll see increased supply immediately, we probably won't. But since the futures market seems to be what drives the price of both gas and oil, we'd probably see a fairly major difference in prices because of the impact of increased future supplies on those markets. We need alternatives, but we can't allow the economy to grind to a halt while we research them.
