According to Dictionary.com...

...Socialism is defined as:
1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

Senator Obama's economic plan
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121366164848479237.html?mod=hps_us_whats_news
Sen. Obama cited new economic forces to explain what appears like a return to an older-style big-government Democratic platform skeptical of market forces. "Globalization and technology and automation all weaken the position of workers," he said, and "a strong government hand is needed to assure that wealth is distributed more equitably."

Hmmmm?

As opposed to where we are now, with things like the Enron loophole, that allow oil commodity trading to be done without any oversight?

quote: "I believe that if the Bush Administration were serious about its regulation, we could begin seeing prices drop within a month."
Hmm, does that fall into the category of ""a strong government hand is needed to assure that wealth is distributed more equitably."? Would that be bad?

I am a strong believer in free market capitalism. Increased government regulation=increased government control over our everyday lives. Governments are supposed to exist to protect the freedoms of their people, not to control their lives. Add to that the fact that socialist governments were responsible for well over 100 million deaths in the 20th century and it's easy to see why we should be very careful about stepping onto that slippery slope

I am a strict capitalist because I think it is the only system that truly works... sad, but greed will always be a driving force...even in socialistic societies. But, I temper my capitalism with a social conscience. I think this is why I can no longer identify myself with republicans... not enough social consciousness... and I can't identify with democrats because I feel you can't just throw money at something and hope it fixes itself. I think we now need a truly independent thinker and reform almost every program. Do you think this can be done?

Another reason I can't identify with parties anymore... democrats, in some ways, believe in small government control in everyday lives (eg more freedom stances) and now republicans, again in some capacity, believe in stricter government controls for everyday lives (eg. more invasion of privacy).

So regulating a commodity market is the path to fascism? I agree with Michael, there has to be some social consciousness at work. Without that, we end up in a chaotic, do-unto-others-before-they-do-
unto-you situation. I favor capitalism, but free market capitalism gave us robber barons, child labor, the Ferengi, and (maybe) artificially inflated oil prices. Regulation isn't always a bad thing.

I could say that regulation by the government has led to the current short supply of oil by denying us the ability to drill in places that we know to have oil and thus increase the available supply. I'm not syaing that there needs to be NO regulation. I'm just saying that we need to be very careful because the more regulation we accept, the more control we give over to people who are absolutely convinced that they know better than us what's good for us. THe government's not supposed to be our parents, protecting us from all the evils of the world. Sometimes there are going to be hard economic times. Nothing the government can do will stop that. Plus, the government pretty much screws up everything it touches, so I'm really leery of increased regulation. Finally, I'm not worried about the path to fascism if he gets elected. I'm worried about the path to Socialism or Communism
